Munkustrap

Munkustrap was confused by all that had gone on that day. Demeter all of a sudden showing interest in starting a family and Bombalurina showing him affection. His mind was so full of confusion that he walked right past his daughter, Victoria and didnt say a word. he felt bad inside as he walked the streets heading for his home away from home. The one spot that only two others even know about. Tugger and Alonzo.

After walking for a bit, he finally arrived at the door to his home and eased his way through the doggie-door that the family had installed for him. He liked their arrangement. He could come and go as he pleased and they didnt seem to mind. As he entered the door, he was immediately greeted by the youngest of the family's children, Alexis. She was 5 years old and full of energy. She picked him up and hugged him tight. He loved it here with them and couldnt help but purr.

Alexis took him up stairs to where the other children were studying. Alexis set him down on the bed and Munkus stretched his whole body and layed down and listened as Jamie, 11 year old boy, and Megan, 14 year old girl, discussed the information in the book. Munkus was tired and needed time to think and so fell asleep and dreamed of happier times with the children here.

Jaime was wanting to stop his studies and spend time with his furry friend, Edgar. "Edgar...tell Megan to let me stop." The young boy looked at him with his childish green eyes and Munkus could only purr and meow at his request.

Edgar, a name he doesnt hear often. It is the name given to him by his human family and only one other knows it. His brother Tugger and Alonzo. They had actually came home with him before and the family didnt seem to mind them being there. At least they didnt mind Alonzo. Tugger ate the goldfish the last time he was there and that didnt go over too well with the children's parents.

Munkus knew that this was the only place that he could get any thinking done in peace and not be bothered by any of the tribe's troubles. He knew it was selfish of him but he needed to be sure.

The red Queen stopped at last to catch her breath. This had to be it. It was a green flat, with a small doggie door at the front. And, as if she needed further confirmation, she could literally smell Munkus’s scent around the house. He came here often, she could tell. How could she have not noticed before? She had always assumed that, when he was absent, he had been with Demeter, but this obviously proved her wrong.

Bomba took a deep breath, and slipped into the doggie door, barely escaping having her tail pinched by it as it snapped shut. It was as though she had stepped into a completely different world. This was nothing like her Human’s house. A small child was running around the room like a Pollicle, giggling crazily. Another Human was sitting at a table, holding a small box to her head and…Talking into to it? Bomba cocked her head curiously. What was going on? Suddenly, the little Human spotted her, and, yelling loudly, rushed towards her, “Look, Mommy, another kitty!”

Bomba hissed and made a break for it, heading for the only escape route visible to her: A flight of stairs, leading up and out of sight. Where did they go? Could they be the stairs to the Heaviside layer? Had the small Human trampled her and killed her? The end was coming! All that was left to do was to run up the stairs, and her life would be over! She sprinted up the stairs, taking them two at a time, and then…

She came out on a landing covered in white stuff, fuzzy and soft beneath her feet. Were they clouds? Or could they be pillows? No! They weren’t clouds! She couldn’t be dead! Munkustrap was stretched out on top of an enormous bed in front of her!

With the happiest purr that she had ever emitted, Bomba leapt up beside Munkus, curling up right against him. She forgot about the fact that he might not want her there, forgot about the scary Humans, forgot even about the strange things that had been happening that day. There was not a thing in the world except her and Munkus.

Munkustrap hd been sleeping quietly upstairs and was actually dreaming of the junkyard when he felt a warmth cuddling up against him. He could hear a purr and could smell a queen. His first thoughts were of Demeter but he realized that she didnt know where his home was. He opens his eyes and sees a red queen laying next to him. "Bomby...how...did you find me?"

Munkus started to move away but the feel of her next to him made him change his mind. Instead he placed his arm across her and laid his head back down, allowing himself to purr. "Nevermind that now...Im too tired to think about it now."

It just then that the oldest child of the family, Megan, entered and saw the two of them together. "Oh...Edgar. You brought a friend with you this time. She is very pretty. You, sir, are a lucky man. I'll leave the two of you alone." Just like that she was gone, leaving him with Bombalurina.

Munkus opened his eyes and spoke. "Bomby can I ask you something? What made you wait until now to say anything? I mean what about Tugger?"

Bomba purred softly. Her happiness was overwhelming, and she could hardly contain herself as she moved even closer to Munkus. “You were always so busy with Demeter…You never gave me a second look. Tugger…I never really liked Tugger all that much…I just gave up on you after a while, and then he came along, so I figured I might as well…”

He kept his eyes locked on hers as she spoke and he could see no diversion in them. She was being honest. He had never thought of it that way before. Had he always given Demeter his attention? It wasnt until lately that Demeter began to open up to him. She mainly used his as a sheild from his brother. He smiled at this crimson beauty laying next to him and purred even louder. "Well...I always looked in your direction. I just didnt think you would be interested in me. I figured you wanted a tom that would spent every waking hour with you. I cant be that tom if it is." His smile faded a bit and he took a deep breath before continuing. "What about Demeter? You two are sisters. She just came out of her shell and even mentioned maybe having kittens with me. I am honored that she would think of me that way but...now I am having eelings for you. I just dont know what to do."

Munkus looked into Bomby's eyes again and a tear ran down his cheek. "Tell me Red...what am to do?"

Bomba’s heart nearly broke when she saw the tear leaking out of Munkus’s eye. In a desperate need to amend his pain, she reached out a paw, and lay it on his, staring directly into his eyes. “Munkus, listen to me. You should do whatever your heart tells you to. I don’t want you to love me just because I love you. There’s no happiness in that. If you want to be with Demeter…” She took a deep breath, trying to keep her voice from quivering, “Then I’m happy for you both. But…There’s something I need to tell you. Demeter…When we were little, she was the sweetest little thing…She loved to play and run around, and she got into everything…”

Bomba allowed herself a little giggle at the memory of her mischievous sister. “When she was taken by Macavity…She changed…She doesn’t laugh anymore, and she doesn’t act like she used to. She sat in her den for three straight days when she escaped, shaking like a leaf, and jumping every time someone spoke. I think…I think half the reason that she likes you so much is that you can protect her…That you make her forget about Macavity...” Bomba’s eyes twinkled with unshed tears as she prepared to deliver the final blow, the one thing that broke her heart about Demeter, “Munkus…I don’t think that she loves you.”

He listened to Bombalurina as she spoke about Demeter and it only reenforced what he had always seemed to feel. He just didnt want to believe it. He wiped his tears away with his paw and then smiled at her. His eyes were glowing and he had to admit that spending time with her like this was nice. Even if the children would pop in on them from time to time. he would only meow at them and they would leave.

"Hey Red...one thing. Dont tell anyone about my human name. Im not ready for anyone to know it except the select few that do. Its all i have of the human world...except for this collar that is." He reached up and placed his paw against her cheek and then leaned close and kissed her lightly on her lips. "I have to say something...that I have wanted to say for a long time. I care about you too. I have for a while and now I can say it freely." As he says those words, his whole outward appearance changes as if a weight had been lifted from him. He had a glow about him that had been missing for a long time. He just lays there and stares deeply into her eyes and smiles...

Bombalurina nearly burst when Munkus’s lips touched hers. Munkus almost seem to glow before her eyes as Bomba hugged him. “I love you Munkus…I love you so much…”

Hearing her say that to him made him the happiest tom under the everlasting cat. "I love you too." He had said it and it felt right. Then his smile faded again. "Now that we have that out of the way...how do we tell Demeter?"

Bombalurina’s smile faded as she heard Munkus’s words. Tell Demeter…That meant that they were going back to the Junkyard…Of course. What had she expected? That they would run away together, and leave the Jellicles? Even if Munkus wasn’t the Protector, she knew that they could never do that. Munkus loved the place too much.

“We could…Just tell her the truth. That we love each other, and that you’re breaking up with her…” She looked up anxiously. “That is…If you are breaking up with her. I mean, I don’t expect that…You don’t have to…”

She could hardly even speak now. She was lost in Munkus’s eyes, those grey pools of gentle light that always seemed to understand.

He raised her face to meet his with his paw and he gently kissed the tip of her nose. He was smiling again and he looked to her with a new confidence. "The truth would be best. I do love you Bomby. She will just have to understand. I can love you and protect you both if need be. That is my job afterall."

Munkus covered his mouth with a paw as he yawned a bit. "Sorry. I havnt been this relaxed in quite some time. Must be the company. Besides it looks like the kids have taken a liking to you." He motioned towards the door with his eyes as the two younger children were peeking around the corner of the door, watching the two of them.

As they disappeared again, he looked to her again. "Before I left, there was something strange going on. Cassandra was sneaking around with Misto. Did you know anything about it?"

Just as Munkus had asked Bomba about the strange goings on at teh junkyard, he sees and hears one of the family's children making their way up the stairs. It was Megan again, seeing as it was her bed they were lounging on, and she had something that caught munkus' nose. She had some treats for them.

"Edgar...would you and your lady friend care for a snack? They're fresh."

She set the bowl down in front of them and poured a bunch in for them. She also set another bowl on teh chest at teh foot of her bed and filled it with water for them as well. Megan stood and eased out of the room and forced the others who were waiting out in teh hall, to go back downstairs.

"Leave them be...our Edgar needs his privacy."

Munkus watched as the girl filled the two bowls for them and exited. he looked to Bomby and with a smile, stood and moved over to the bowl. he didnt start but instead looked back to her and motioned for her to join him.

"I hope they are something you like. I find them to be filling enough. I have tasted worse things." he stepped aside and sat down to give her first taste of their eddible offerings. "After you...I insist...mi'lady." As he said that, he gave her a slight bow of his head and then smiled again but this time it wasnt forced or anything...he was happy...with her.

Bombalurina smiled widely, as her hear began to glow with happiness. "Thank you..."

She stepped lightly forward, and sniffed the bowl curiously. It didn't seem too bad. Cautiously, she caught one of the small treats between her teeth, and gulped it down in one bite. It was delicious! With an excited meow, she bared down on the bowl of food, still eating delicately, and with lady like manner, but with a new hunger.

"I told you they were good." He watched her and smiled. This queen was a dream in the flesh and fur. He had dreamed of being with her for as long as he had known her and now they were. Munkus lay nearby and didnt make a move to join her. "Take your time...eat all you want."

He thought to himself that he could watch her all night and never get tired of the view. Why did I wait so long to say something to her? What was I waiting on? His mind was goingover all those things and outwardly, he was calm and smiling. He let out a purr of happiness, one he hadnt used in quite some time and it felt good...

Bombalurina licked up the last bit from her bowl, and straightened up, her belly full. She simply glowed from head to toe with a new certian happiness, something that she wasn't used to feeling. It made her giddy, and, in a moment of weakness and pure joy, and leaned forward, and rubbed her head softly against Munkustrap's, purring gently into his ear.

Munkus was thinking as he felt Bomby rub against his face and heard her purring softly in his ear. Why did I ever wait to tell her how i really felt? I was a fool. He leaned against her cheek and purred as well. He hoped that this night would never end, but he knew it had to.

Munkus quietly spoke so she could hear him. "Do you like it...here...with me?" He waited for her to answer and hoped that she would because this was something he had never shared with Demeter and only with his brother and Alonzo. He had shared his whole life with her now and had no secrets to hide. Sharing his human family with her was a huge step even though he hadn't actually invited her. He was glad she had come though.

Bombalurina leaned back from Munkus, and looked at him kindly. Her eyes were shining with unshed tears of absolute joy and contentment. “Yes…Of course I do. I’m happy anywhere I can be with you.” Suddenly, she frowned. She had heard a crash outside. “Did you hear that? It sounded like…A cat…”

Munkus was gazing into her eyes and he too heard the crash from outside. His ears perked a bit and then he turned in the direction of the back door, downstairs. "Yes...I did. Maybe we better check it out."

With a quick look outside the bedroom door and seeing the coast clear, Munkus crept to the stairs and down to the kitchen. He eased to the door he always used to get in and out and poked his head through. Not seeing anything, He looked back to Bomby and motioned for her to follow him out. He made his way cautiously out into the family's back yard and waited for her to join him and looked for anything out of the ordinary. "I wonder who it could be...no one knows about this place but you and my brother and Alonzo."

He looked out into the darkness and called. "Who's there? Come out and show yourself."

With a quick glance out the window, Bombalurina followed Munkustrap outside. The cool breeze ruffled her fur as she stared into the blackness…Except…It wasn’t all blackness. At the top of a tall garbage pile about 15 feet away, there were two cats standing, talking. One was a sort of striped yellow and black, and the other… “Munkus! It’s Macavity!”

Munkustrap looked to where Bomby was looking and indeed it was his older brother, Macavity. He growled under his breath and his fur stood on ed up his back and his eyes narrowed as if the devil were standing ready to fight him there. "You better stay here. Im going to end this right here and now."

Munkus quickly covered the distance of the yard and over the fence and over onto the pile.

Munkustrap had left Alonzo in Tugger's care and returned to his yard where he had left Bomby before. He had hoped that she was still there waiting for his return. He had a lot of questios and alot of explaining to do. As he walked, his eyes remained gazing aimlessly into the realm of nothingness. What have I done? What have I allowed to happen? These were the questions running through his mind.

Once he reached the step leading to his door into the house, he sat down and stared back to the spot where Demeter had attacked him and then left with Macavity of all cats in this world. He spoke as he looked up at the moon. "Why? Am I right in all that I have done? What am I to do?"

"Let her go."

Bomba stepped out from behind a trash can where she had been hiding. "I heard the whole thing, Munkus." She said softly. "Demeter knows that what's she's doing...She...She did it to protect the tribe."

Bomba sat down next to Munkus, looking at him with an understanding gaze. "I know you must be feeling guilty, but...It's not your fault."

She thought for a moment about the secret that Demeter had told her long ago. No, she decided. Munkus wasn't ready for that yet.

Munkus was feeling a great weight upon his shoulders now after watching Demeter attack him and then leave with Macavity. He was supposed to protect the tribe and just stood there in shock. Then he remembered a strange comment Macavity mentioned. Munkus looked to Bomby and gazed into her eyes. "Im going to ask you something and I want the truth. How did you find me? Before you answer...think hard on the consequences if you lie to me. I'll be able to see it in your eyes. If you truely love me...you wont be able to lie."

Bombalurina stared at Munkus. What he said was completely true. She couldn’t lie to him. “Munkus…I…I love you so much…And I cannot lie to you…When you left, I went to sit alone in my den, and…Macavity’s voice spoke to me, and told me where I could find you…” She said the last part all in a rush, and hungher head low. “I’m so sorry…”

He looked up as she spoke and couldnt believe his ears. "He did that? Why?" He turned and looked at the moon again. The light shining in his eyes made them seem almost blank and void of color. "Bombalurina...I..." He quickly turned to face her. He reached out and gently placed his paw under her chin and lifted her face to his. He leaned in close and was only an inch or so away and smiled slightly. "I love you too." Then he leaned in and kissed her gently.

Bombalurina kissed Munkustrap back in full force, closing her eyes in pure bliss. When they drew apart, she sighed softly, looking at the Tom that she was hopelessly and completely in love with.

“I don’t know why Macavity did what he did…But, I think, for once in his life, he did something good…Without him, I never would have had the courage to speak up.”

Munkus nodded to her comment. He knew there was more to his reasoning. He needed Demeter to come willingly. "I dont know why he did either but I feel he had more than our happiness in mind. The positive was that we finally expressed our love for each other. The bad is that we may have lost Demeter forever. What should I...er...we do?"

He gazed into her beautiful eyes and tried to show that he was with whatever decision she made.

Alonzo arrived just as Munkus posed his question to the red queen by his side. he stepped forward into the light of the porchlight. "Yes...Red...what should we do? I vote we see your father Munkus but it has to be your decision...not hers."

He had a glare of insult a he looked from his friend to his new queen and then back. Alonzo was upset at what had transpired and felt that Bomby was somehow envolved.

Bombalurina looked at Alonzo. He had never been so rude to her before! Something was not right with him…But she didn’t want to concern herself with that now. Instead, she turned back to Munkus.

“I think…I think we should let Demeter choose for herself where she wants to be…If we drag her back her before she’s ready to come back, she’ll be unhappy all of her days…She needs time to heal, Munkus…You both do.”

Munkus was surprised by Alonzo's presence and rudeness. he glared at his friend and then turned back to Bomby. "I agree. We cant make her come back." turning to Alonzo. "And you know its true. If you want to go to my father...then go. I wont stop you."

Watching Alonzo leave, Munkus wonders why he was so hateful to Bomby...surely he didnt think she was involved with Demeter's choice for nothing other than what had transpired tonight. He turned back to his queen for which he truly felt he cared for with all his heart. he smiled, something he had been doing more of since she came into his life, and looked her in the eyes. "so...do we stay here or return home and see what kind of mess Tugger has caused? Personally I wouldnt mind a bit longer here alone with you." His eyes widened at a thought that sprang into his mind. "I meant to ask earlier...do you...I mean do you have a human family?"

Bombalurina bit her lip. She didn’t think that Munkus was likely to laugh at her. After all, he had a Human family.

“Yes…I do…I live with this little old lady down the road. She’s the sweetest Human you could ever meet, Munkus! She lets me come and go as much as I want, she buys me pretty new collars, and she feeds me all sorts of good things! If you only knew her, Munkus…I know you’d like her.”

Munkus noticed how Bomby tends to bite her lip when put on the spot. he smiled as she described the old lady she lived with. "Down the road...you say? Do you think she would...well...like me as well? if I am going to be in your life...I should get to know you better huh? But that is totally up to you...I dont want to inconvenience you. Your human part of your life is personal and I dont want to intrude upon it."

Munkus slid closer to her and placed a paw on top of hers and leaned over and rubbed his cheek against hers and purred loud enough that she could tell he was happy.

Bombalurina smiled gently, and said, “She’ll love you Munkus…And I would be happy to bring you to my home.”

She stood up, and began to walk swiftly down the street, beckoning to Munkus to follow her. She took a sharp turn and saw the small apartment where her Human lived. The window closest to the door stood open, as it always did. “Come on!” She whispered, jumping onto the windowsill, “Come and meet her!”

Munkus was happy that Bomby wanted him to go with her and he did so. He followed her to an apartment with an open window which she jumped up to. He nodded to her and as he joined her on the window sill, he took note of how close the two of them actually were and never knew it.

He moved next to her and rubbed up against her again. He couldnt get enough of the touch of this queen. She was everything that he had been needing and wanting for so long. "You are sure about this...she'll like me?"

Bombalurina purred as well, and wrapped her tail around Munkus's, content to share this moment with him before entering her world. "I promise you, Munkus, she'll adore you..."

Munkus nodded and smiled to his queen. "Then lead the way mi'lady. This is your home and she knows you. I'll follow." he waited for Bombalurina to enter the window firstand then he would follow her slowly at first.
