Alonzo ran through the night towards the one cat who he felt he could trust. Old Deuteronomy was Munkus' father and the wisest of all the Jellicles. Alonzo knew in his heart that he would have the answer to his dilema now.

After a few minutes of running, Alonzo came to the Vickerage Wall, the resting place of the old cat. It was vacant of course, so Zo made his way to Old D's den and called to him. "Old Deuteronomy...can I speak with you? Its an emergency...please."

Old Deuteronomy limped out of his den, squinting at the bright light of the moon. He didn’t want to admit it to the Jellicles, but his eyesight was not what it used to be, and even the smallest amount of light hurt. “Alonzo?” he whispered gently, “Is that you? What’s wrong? What has happened?”

Alonzo was always awe-struck in the presence of Old D and inched up closer to the elderly Jellicle. "Yes...sir. Something terrible has happened. Demeter has gone with Macavity and Munkustrap has done nothing to stop her." Zo tried hard to keep his emotions in check. "What should we do?"

Old Deuteronomy stared at Alonzo for a moment, taking in what he had said. Then he sighed softly, and placed his arm around the young Tom. “Come inside, my child…”
He hobbled into the den with Alonzo, and sat down on an old box, pointing to another one just beside it. “Sit down…Now…Please tell me why you are here telling me this instead of my son Munkus? Isn’t Demeter his Queen? It is not at all like him to be so uncaring.”

Alonzo took the seat offered by Old D and a tear formed in his eye as he listened to his questions. he shook his head and then looked at the old cat. "He is away at his human family's home. He is there with...Bombalurina."

Old Deuteronomy looked at Alonzo. "With Bombalurina...They are in love..." He did not wait for an answer. "So Macavity has stolen Demeter away yet again...The poor young Queen...Tell me something, Alonzo. Did she go with Macavity of her own free will?"

Alonzo bit his lip and nodded to him. "Yes...she did." He then stood and faced the old cat and raised his arms in anger as he continued. "Munkustrap just stood there and did nothing."

Old Deuteronomy stood up, and placed his paw on Alonzo's shoulder. "Calm yourself. Munkus did exactly what he should have done. If he had given chase, both he and Demeter might have been killed."

He patted Alonzo gently, and looked him straight in the eyes. "The best thing we can do now is wait."

"Wait!!! Wait...I cant just let...I...love her too much to..." He was so confused and didnt know whether to trust his mind or his heart. He sat back down and tried to calm himself. "We cant just wait...I...cant wait."

Old Deuteronomy nodded sympathetically, and whispered. "I know, Alonzo...But please, listen to me. Demeter must be feeling very hurt and betrayed by Munkus...By all of the Jellicles. If we try to rescue her now, she will never agree. It will only make her feel more attached to Macavity. You must try to understand how she is feeling now. To her, Macavity seems a bit like her savior; he came to her, and took her away when she needed it most. I dare say that he planned it that way, but we must not try to interfere until the time is right.

Alonzo laid his face in his paws and sobbed. He knew that the old Jellicle was right but it was hard to hear. "Since I love her...I will do as you say. I'll give her time...I just dont know how much..."

The oldest Jellicle nodded. "I know...You may stay here as long as you need to, Alonzo...Yu know I think of you as a second son...Although, perhaps you might want to get back to your protecting duties? If you are up to it, of course..."

Alonzo listened to the oldest Jellicle with a sense of duty. He was right. He should be getting back to the yard. With Tugger in charge, there was no telling what might be happening. "I am up to it. I thank you for your confidence in me. I also consider you to be my father as well. I'll return in the morning...if thats alright?"

Old Deuteronomy smiled. “You may come back whenever you feel that you need to.”
He gave Alonzo a last pat on the back and led him out of the den. “Try to get some sleep…and try not to think about her too much. She will come back. I promise.”

Alonzo walked with Old D and nodded. He smiled at the older cat and truly felt better knowing he could come back anytime. He laid down on the wall and watched the stars and thought about Demeter. He spoke to the moon. "Watch over Demeter for me. I dont want anything to happen to her."

Munkus was quiet as he and his love made their way to his father's den and once they arrived, he was hesitant to call out. He looked to Bomby and then turned and called out.

"Father...I need your council. Are you there?"

As he waited, he gripped Bomby's paw in his and gently squeezed it.

Old Deuteronomy opened his bleary eyes, and got up from his seat in the den. He hobbled out of the comfortable old basket that made up his den. His understanding eyes swept over the two young cats. "Come inside..." He whispered.

Bombalurina's eyes widen as the old leader approched her. Though she saw him during the Jellicle Ball every year, she had never had the chance to speak with him alone. Truth be told, she had never been too interested in talking with him- until now. She looked questioningly at Munkustrap, wondering whether or not to follow.

Munkus smiled at seeing his father. he moved to follow and felt his arm tug a bit. He turned back to see the wide eyed expression on Bomby's face. His face was peaceful and his eyes were expressive.

"Please....I cant do this alone."

He then gently pulled her and lead her into Old D's den. He took a spot just inside and pulled her close by him and then looked to his father. The old leader had an air of wisdom that he hoped to have one day.

"Father...I have failed you and Demeter has left with Macavity. What should we do?"

Old D. closed his eyes and sighed deeply. He had sensed that his son was coming, and, for one of the first times in his very long and productive life, he didn't know what to say. There was silence for a moment as he thought.

"...You have to save her...It will be dangerous. I suggest gathering several other strong Toms to assist you. And there is the possibility that some of them may not return..."

He listened to his father's words and took them all in before he spoke in reply. He squeezed Bomby's paw and then continued.

"Father but how can I allow others to suffer for my mistake? How will I choose? I can't place the junkyard in danger by taking thier protection away."

He glanced to his queen and then spoke again.

"I will go alone. I will bring her back or die trying."

She whirled around to face the old leader against, her eyes filled with unshed tears.

Old D. smiled a little at Bombalurina and put his paw on his son's shoulder. "Munkustrap....You must learn not to distance yourself from those who love you...If you will not accept the help of other Toms, you must at least allow your Queen to come with you."

Munkus looked into Bomby's eyes and then nodded.

"You knew I had to try. I couldnt do this without you there."

He turned back to his father and said nothing but nodded and smiled before turning to leave. He gently squeezed Bomby's paw and lead her outside.

"You ready for this?"

Alonzo stalked out from the shadows behind the pair and his voice could be heard before he was seen.

"Im coming with you. I need to do this...for her."

He stopped with enough distance that he was visible but far enough away to not be touched. His eyes were serious and wide.

"I just cant leave this in your hands Munkustrap."

Bombalurina nodded, smiling at Munkus, and whirled around when she heard Alonzo's voice. But he no longer looked like the Alonzo that she remembered. He was pale and worn, and looked almost frightened to come closer.

"...Of course you can come..."

Munkus took his friend's words to heart and lowered his head in agreement with Bomby. Seeing Alonzo there made his heart swell and he suddenly felt a little better with him there.

"Shall we go then?"

He watched as Alonzo nodded and turned away and began walking out of sight. Munkus turned back to Bomby.

"Promise me something. Never leave my side no matter what happens."

Bomba nodded quietly, her eyes wide as she looked over the Tom that she so respected and loved. "I will never leave your side, Munkus...You couldn't get me away even if you wanted to."
